Wanted to create a small personal project to practice some glass shattering techniques in SideFX Software Houdini and decided to use the window shattering scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off as a reference.
I started by procedurally modelling the basic house geometry and prepping it for a RBD simulation. I then used the RBD Car Rig and a RBD simulation to quickly animate my car model going through the window glass.
Next, I fractured the window geometry by first storing a rest attribute, deforming the geometry based on the car's impact point, noising it up and swapping back to the original rest position. I then created custom constraints and deleted clusters of them using a SOP solver inside the RBD Bullet Solver.
Once I was happy with the result, I created a debris simulation just to add a few smaller pieces, and also a smoke pyro sim.
For the hero tree deformation, I created a separate RBD simulation, fracturing the branch geometry and utilising soft constraints. I then created a vellum cloth simulation for the leaves and set up my initial render stage in Solaris.
