I wanted to create a small project to practice reference matching a pyro FX shot in SideFX Software Houdini, and landed on this reference of a warehouse fire.
I started by modelling a simple warehouse environment, assembling pallets, cardboard boxes, and other industrial props to match the reference's layout.
For the main pyro FX, I used the pyro source spread node, which I then rasterized, and a custom outward-moving collision velocity volume. I used the Axiom solver for this project, and also created a smoke simulation sourced from the fire.
Once I was happy with the result, I moved on to creating the sprinkler sprays using the POP solver and the pop fluid node to get cool motion for the sprays, adjusted the pscale and rasterised the result into a volume.
In Solaris, I set up my render stage, positioned lights using an instancer, added a karma fog box, split my scene into passes, and assigned AOVs.
